The original Bay Area Meat CSA, founded by Bonnie Powell and Tamar Adler, operated very much like a vegetable CSA: community members signed up for monthly shares of meat that was purchased, coordinated and divided into shares by the organizers. By paying for shares up front, CSA members guaranteed ranchers the capital they need to bring animals to market. In return, members received a share of mixed cuts (steaks, roasts, grounds, sausage, etc.) at a better price than through traditional retail sales.

Membership grew rapidly and Tamar valiantly tried to manage the CSA in her free time, but it does not make sense to run a CSA without controlling inventory; that's why we've decentralized it and re-launched it online. We did succeed in our original goal: helping ranchers to create their own CSAs using our model. These Bay Area-based CSAs and Meat Buying Clubs were or still are affiliated with the original Bay Area Meat CSA:
