I got a whole pig back in January, I took 1/2, and 2 of us split it up. It seemed to work out pretty well. I had everyone drop off ice chests at my house the day before with their checks. The ice chests turned out not to be necessary, but maybe on another purchase? I went up to Cotati to get the pig and brought it back. I had a 2 hour window that everyone was supposed to pick up their stuff. It went very smoothly, but there were only 4 of us sharing, so that may be why. I took half and the other 3 people divided up the other half. Beyond the help I got weighing stuff to divide it all up, I did it all. That could be another reason!
In my honest opinion, I don't think we'll need that many people to divide up a pig. I think this time I'd be happy with a 1/4. I felt the 1/6th shares were pretty small, but if someone only has a refrig/freezer combo, that could well be all they could handle. But it doesn't seem to make it worth the work. Perhaps that's why people aren't willing to do too much?
Rachael and Lynn, one of the things i just noticed is that we can send a message to all the people on our friend list. That may be another way I can get word of what we have coming and we can keep up a conversation that way perhaps.
Please do take me up on the help offer. I'm getting 1/2 veal from Godfrey this month and would be interested in some of that pig if I still have room. I've had a lot of difficulty getting things going with the groups I'm part of now. It only happens if I do it all and it sounds like you may be in the same boat. Maybe if we joined forces???
I'm a member of 3 east bay groups, buty none of the ones you list. The way the list is set up, a person only gets notification of postings to their group and page and replies to discussions you're involved in. General postings to the discussion page don't get sent out to anyone unless you're part of the thread, so you have to check the page. That's why I'm asking about an email list, much like Mel has with his lambs. If you're dealing with Godfrey Farms all on your own, perhaps I can help. If we can extend our network, we can make each order more successful.
